Menu Plan Monday - Quick And Simple

When I planned the menu for the family this week, I had to do son with a different cook in mind. Mr Infrastructure and I are doing something of a role swap this week. The aim of this for me to do some long term planning, complete the preseason for the 30 Day Challenge and work on documenting all my recipes.

Monday: Pumpkin Soup

Baking: White Chocolate Chip Cookies
(I will still do the baking - I think I can only push it so far!)

Tuesday: Chicken Stir Fry With Seasonal Vegetables

Wednesday: Baked Penne With Bacon

Thursday: Tacos

Friday: Roast Chicken and Vegetables
(The chicken will be bought cooked, but the veggies cooked at home.)

Saturday: Picklebums Easy Beef and Vegie Triangles
(Using left over meat from the tacos.)

Sunday: Pasta with Chicken and Spinach

Again, I have included the shopping list for this week’s menu plan as an excel file. The below paragraphs explain what is in the attached excel file below.

Shopping List For Family Menu Plan 080721

It contains three separate spreadsheets. The first is named “Complete Grocery’ and it lists by supermarket aisle all the ingredients that are needed to cook the family meals for this week.

The second spreadsheet is named “Ingredient By Meal’ and it lists the ingredients that are required for the family by each individual meal this week. I have also left on the aisle and aisle subsection in this spreadsheet for reference, but if you want to print that out you will need to alter the print area.

The third spreadsheet is named “Menu Plan” and is a modified version of the menu plan that I print and place on the fridge. I have a notes section, that I like to populate with any activities that are likely to impact the evening meal routine.

Monthly Review - June

REVIEW - KEY TASKS FOR JUNE:

Not being too busy.
June although not perfect has been my best month so far, for getting to bed before 11pm. I actually wrote myself a work plan at the start of the month in consultation with Mr Infrastructure.

Across the week I allocated work hours for the blog and time for my gym sessions and then made a commitment to myself and Mr Infrastructure that (within reason :) ) I would stick to this plan.

The work plan saw a dramatic reduction in the hours that I would spend on the computer/blog and as such I needed to realign my goals for the blog, so that they would be achievable within the allocated time.

Mid year catch ups.
This is well underway, but there is still a couple of dear friends that I have not seen for a while, so will be doing more of the same in July.

Re-do the family budget.
Almost finished. A few last minute items, (like purchase of my new beautiful MacBook) has required the budget to be readjusted slightly.

Change over toys.
Successfully completed.

Gather donations.
Successfully completed.

GOALS - KEY TASKS FOR JULY:
Not being too busy.
I have to put on this every month to keep myself honest. I will revise the work plan slightly this month to accommodate the key task for the month.

Calm and rested start to term 3.
With a very tired end to term 2, I will make sure that we are back into a calm routine and that the children are well rested in the lead up to the start of school. The last week end I will keep quite clear and we also have the Monday off as well, so will keep that as a rest day before plunging back into term 3.

Christmas Planning in July
There is a growing tradition in Australia to have a “Christmas in July” celebration to experience what Christmas is like in the Northern Hemisphere. So I have taken inspiration from this and am going to do Christmas Planning in July.

In the Australia the lead up to Christmas is also the lead up to the end of the school year and is a very busy time. We also have two birthdays in the month before Christmas and there is always my desire to catch up with good family and friends before Christmas arrives.

The combination of these events generally means that I am completely occupied for the month of December and end up feeling stressed out about achieving all the tasks that I set for myself.

Mr Infrastructure would interject here and say that is actually the problem in itself and that I should not try and do so much. But I do like to make my own cards, I do like to make gifts for the children’s teacher’s and I do like to have the children’s parties at home etc.

This year I hope by some comprehensive planning and some preparation in July, I will avoid the crazy end of year rush that I usually put myself through.

This task is quite big in itself, so I am only setting myself these 3 key goals for July, in the hope that I will achieve all successfully.

What’s on your list of key thing to do for July?

10 Top Posts For June

This post comes to you a little later than usual. My techno troubles have continued unfortunately and my notebook is very broken and will probably not be fixed until Friday. In the meantime I will only have limited access to a computer, so apologies in advance for not participating much in the comments sections, or visiting your blog this week.

I love the amazing cross section of information that you come across whilst travelling the blogosphere. Here is a collection of 10 of my favourites from June:

SCHOOL HOLIDAY CRAFT INSPIRATION
(1). What Can We Do Today?? - Draw Big from Kate at Picklebums.
This is an inexpensive, quiet activity that will get the kids drawing.

(2). Book Cover Craft from Jane at Kidzarama.
Terrific idea for utilising the art work from the children.

(3). Some Friday Artfulness from Jean at The Artful Parent.
Two simple ideas that would be fun across a number of age groups - making a book and having fun with egg cartons. Also check out The Artful Parent’s etsy store while you are there, for some beautifully handcrafted items.

(4). Featured Creativity from Sew Mama Sew.
Visually all of these handcrafted items are so appealing (and probably completely out of my league in terms of ability), and they will certainly inspire.

(5). Softies for Mirabel - New Arrivals - Part 1 from Pip at Meet Me At Mikes.
A fantastic cause making softies for Mirabel Foundation. I can’t actually make these beautiful creations, but they do plan to sell some to raise fund, so I will wait to then and hand over some cash.

CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL ISSUES
(6). Should We Stop Having Children to Save the Earth? by Jennifer Lance at Eco Child’s Play.
This is the first of two posts on the issue of having children and the impact on the environment. This post gives some factual data on the foot print of a child, but points out that there are choices in the way we live that mean that the foot print does not have to be so heavy for a family.

(7). No Child Left Behind - from the Crunchy Chicken.
The second post on this issue poses the question “Is it morally wrong to have children?” Although a short post in itself, the Crunchy Chicken extracted 199 comments on this post and there a some very strongly held views from both sides of the fence which make interesting reading.

(8). “She’s just a cute Tween…but she grows up to be a curvy, cool Teen!” from Danielle Miller at The Butterfly Effect.
This posts starts with a critical review of a new Barbie like doll and uses this as a base from which to explore the issue of sexualisation of children in the contemporary media environment.

(9). A Solution to Global Obesity… YOU! from Craig Harper.
This post came after the announcement that Australia is now officially become the fattest nation on the planet and it really doesn’t hold back. “What causes obesity (for the majority) are poor choices over an extended period of time.” There is also so great discussion in the comments worth reading as well.

(10). Ain’t no power like the power of the mama from the Crunchy Domestic Goddess
Some postive affirmations about the potential of mothers as a pressure group with great links of where and how to get involved.

Take the time to check them out if you can, they are definitely worth it!

May - Posts Of The Month

Here are a collection of posts that I came across in my travels across the blogosphere, that I enjoyed during the month of May.

SOCIETY
I fear for our young people written by Belongum. I came across this blog from the Aussie Blogger’s Forum and am so happy to have discovered it. This post is a beautifully written plea for us as a society to start taking better care of our young people.

Club 21, “girl world” exposed: binge drinking, bullying, low self esteem and distorted body image. - posted by Leigh from All for Women. Having only a four year old daughter, this post gave me a shocking insight into how peer pressure is now presenting itself if the environment of the Web 2.0 world.

From Let’s talk about social justice, Loren poses the question “Are we racist?” The post looks about the importance of dealing with race in a positive way with children. To end racism it will need to start with the next generation.

Wants VS Needs - posted at Journeyer’s Chronicals, looks at how easily we fall into the consumerism trap.

PARENTING - STORIES FROM THE HEART
Two - from Alison at Three Times Kewl writes a poignant piece about her hopes and fears for her beautiful child.

The club nobody wants to belong to - Tiff from Three Ring Circus has experienced grief as a mother that I cannot imagine. In this heart felt post, she gives a delicate insight into how a new member of her club may be feeling.

A Letter to My Son, on Starting Out In Life - Leo from Zen Habits shares with his readers a letter he has thoughtfully written for his three year old son.

PARENTING AND EDUCATION
Another “No Homework!” Note to the Teacher - by Angela at Homework. Dinner. Life. I am not a massive fan of homework and I loved the idea that Angela is encouraging parents to stand up for their kids and write a note to say they won’t be doing homework on their family holiday.

Can Parental Involvement Make Kids Smarter? - Eden Kennedy guest posting on Wonderland, looks at a number of issues in this post, but the one I found most startling was this fact that I found from a link she had to the New York Times

A profusion of online programs that can track a student’s daily progress, including class attendance, missed assignments and grades on homework, quizzes and tests, is changing the nature of communication between parents and children, families and teachers. With names like Edline, ParentConnect, Pinnacle Internet Viewer and PowerSchool, the software is used by thousands of schools, kindergarten through 12th grade. PowerSchool alone is used by 10,100 schools in 49 states.

Create your own audio books - from PlayActivities. A simple way, with links to free software on how to make your own audio books for your kids.

HUMOUR
Why I’ve cancelled my facebook account - from Cello Bella. Now I don’t have a facebook account, and I still found this video very funny. Mr Infrastructure who does have a facebook account found this hilarious.

Hope the start of June is kind to you!

Monthly Review for April/May

At the start of May I changed to my own server and it took me a while to sort out some problems and settle in. As such the Monthly Review for April did not appear. This therefore is a combined review of April and May and some goals I am setting myself for June.

REVIEW - KEY TASKS FOR APRIL/MAY:

Not being too busy.
April was not great, May started roughly and I actually averaged about 6 hours a night sleep for the first 10 days in May. So far away from where I wanted to be. But in last two weeks of May, I have seemed to have achieved more balance. They key was creating a work plan and sticking to it. Providing I can stick to it for June, I will talk about this further in a separate post.

Making a decision on kinder for Babaganouski
Babaganouski is born on April 30 which is the cut off date for age entry into kinder and school. I needed to decide if I want to enrol him for 3 y.o kinder in 2009 or wait until 2010. We have decided that we will wait until 2010 and I am confident that this will be the right decision for him.

This decision has the flow on effect of determining when we send Babaganouski to school. Our decision now means he will turn 6 in the year he starts Prep. This is a widely debated topic in Australia and one which is a personal one for each family and is dependent upon the individual child.

Create a Command Centre
During April I had on my to do list to make this myself as per the instructions on Mom Ready. This actually never happened and so I decided to look to purchase one online. The Wall Organiser that I like the most and which will fit the space that I have for it, does not send to Australia. I am yet to find one similar that ships to Australia, so I am still searching on this one and if you have any suggestions I would love to hear them.

Birthday Celebrations
We had two small parties this year, Babaganouski’s was very small, but also very special as we were in Mildura a couple of days after his birthday and had it there with his grandparents, aunt, uncle and cousin who live there as well as his other aunties and uncles that were also visiting.

Organise the Special People
Each child had the special person of their choice to take to their school for Special Persons Day.

Writing Practice for Little Rascal
This was actually much easier than I had expected. One weekend in April while I was in the study blogging, I asked Little Rascal to come and sit with me and hand write a story. Once he completed it, I said he could use the computer to “publish” it and I would teach him to insert pictures for the illustrations.

It took him a little while to come up with a topic, but he decided on Scooby Doo. Now I would have preferred a different topic, but given that he was excited about it, I decided to let that go and focus on the fact that at least he was writing.

Once he had published and illustrated his first story which was titled Scooby Doo vs Shaggy, Little Rascal informed me that he was going to do a series and his next one was going to be Scooby Doo vs Fred. Each weekend he would work on a story and then take it to school for Show and Share.

I loved that he was so proud of his work. Little Rascal has a wonderful teacher and even without me discussing this project with her, after his second story he came home from school with a presentation folder to put his stories in. Little Rascal very excitedly told me, that when it is finished it is allowed to go in their reading corner!

Back Yard
We are into maintenance mode now here and as it is winter the level of work is not as great

GOALS - KEY TASKS FOR JUNE:

Not being too busy.
Measurables here for me are being in bed by 11.00pm and one week day a week where I am at home.

Mid year catch ups.
Now that we are entering June, it is going to be 6 months or more since I have seen some people. I am going to try and organise a couple of catch up with groups of friends, so I can see a few mates at a time.

Re-do the family budget.
This task actually falls into Mr Infrastructure’s department (yay!!), but I do have to help with the inputs. A few things have changed recently, so to be truly reflective of our in comings and outgoings we need to revise our figures.

Change over toys.
I like to change over the toys that we have out on display every couple of months, so they meet the interests and developmental needs of the children.

Gather donations.
The boy’s schools is supporting the St Vincent de Paul Society’s Winter Appeal I will get the children to help me go through some cupboards in our house and find items for donation.

So are you like me and a little freaked out that it is June already? What goals are you setting for yourself this month?

Monthly Review - March

Time to take a look what I have achieved during March and then take a peek forward and see what is on the horizon for April.

My monthly review does not go into the low level detail, but looks at the key tasks that I was hoping to work my way through and how I fared.

REVIEW - KEY TASKS FOR MARCH:

Not being too busy.
My aim was to be in bed by 11.00pm as a norm and I have to confess to making it to bed by this time less than a quarter of the nights in March.

Towards the end of the month (knowing that I was going to have to write how poorly I had fared), I started noting down what I was doing with my time for a few days to see why this is a constant occurrence.

The bottom line is that I don’t want to miss out on anything, and will keep cramming things into my day without dropping any activities off. This is not a sustainable way to go and I have to make some decisions about where I will focus my energies this month.

Complete buying winter clothes for children and mum and dad.
Children - completed.
Mr Infrastructure - yet to start. If he doesn’t get going soon I will have to do it for him!
Me - The heavy winter coat that I have been hunting for is alluding me. But I came across I op therefore I am in by blog travels and I will check out a few of the stores they recommend.

Easter holiday and camping
Completed and so happy to have been part of my friends camping troop. I have memories of a strong, funny and intelligent woman that I will never forget.

Enrollment/Registration for Term 2 after school activities.
Completed

Back garden
Work in progress - about a quarter of the way through this project. It will probably be May before we finish as we have sport on both Saturday and Sunday mornings now.

GOALS - KEY TASKS FOR APRIL:

Not being too busy.
I will have to keep putting this one on until I achieve a better balance. I have quite a few things that I want to achieve with the blog over the next couple of months that will require a decent amount of work from me.

I have given quite a lot of thought as to where I can squeeze this extra time from and for the next 6 weeks I am going to try and limit some of my social activities.

I love morning teas, after school family plays, parties etc but I am going to try pulling back slightly this month, so that I can make it to bed by 11.00pm. I need to do better than last month.

Making a decision on kinder for Babaganouski
Babaganouski turns 2 on April 30 and I need to decide if I want to enrol him for kinder next year. This decision is just a part of the broader decision about when we send him to school.

April 30 is the cut off day for children turning 5 before they can enter school in Victoria. Little Rascal was April 20 and we made the decision to wait for him to turn 5 before he went to school (he turned 6 when in prep) and this decision was a fantastic one for him. He settled into Prep even better than I could have imagined. I need to assess if this will be the right move for Babaganouski.

Create a Command Centre
This sounds so completely nerdy I know, but if you take a peek at the photo in this link at The Organizing Junkie’s, you might understand why I want one!

I have a Manila folder that I keep on a kitchen bench near the phone, but it inevitably builds up to a mess and doesn’t always have the items I would like on hand there.

Birthday Celebrations
A party for Babaganouski and a dinner with friends for Little Rascal. You can see more about how I am planning those on my Thursday posts during April.

Organise the Special People
In May both kinder and school have Grandparents/Special Persons Days. We have 2 grandparents and a great grandmother in Melbourne, but there was a year (when Babaganouski was born) that I left the organising too late and the new born Babaganouski and I ended up being the special visitors.

Writing Practice for Little Rascal
Little Rascal is an active child and has a natural preference for mathematics. He will often ask me to write him sums to do, but when it comes to writing a story (and practising his handwriting) he is a little apprehensive. I think relates to his perfectionist nature, so this month I am going to try a few different things to get him writing more at home.

Back Yard
At least with the cooler weather the growth of the plants (and weeds) slows a little. I think to work through the next quarter would be doable this month.

How did you go last month and what key tasks are you setting for yourself for April?

Monthly Review - February

This little task that I like to complete, does have its origins from my Performance Management days in the corporate world, whereby Monthly Reporting up the line was a key accountability of mine.

At home even though I don’t have to report to anyone, I do like to stop and take the time to have a look what I have achieved over the last month and then take a peek forward and see what is on the horizon for the next month.

Obviously I have never written my review out as formally as this before, as I have just jotted notes in my “to do” notebook. I have to admit to being quite attached to my “to do” notebook. I do love the feeling of crossing a task off the list once it is done. It is so satisfying to look down and see lots of lines through my list of things to do. (I am really outing myself here as a massive nerd I know, but can anyone else relate to this?)

My monthly review does not go into the low level detail, but looks at the key tasks that I was hoping to work my way through and how I fared.

REVIEW - KEY TASKS FOR FEBRUARY:

Settling the children into new kinder/school routines
This went pretty smoothly, however I did misjudge the tiredness factor for Possum from having to do an afternoon session of kinder, then follow it up the next day with a full day session. It was only when a two weeks ago she said to me that she didn’t want to go kinder that I worked out that she was finding it a bit tough.

I sat down with her and talked about why she didn’t want to go and it became clear that it was the length of time at kinder, not just being there that was the issue. The second full day is currently too much for her. When I said that I would come and pick her up before lunch, she brightened immediately and we have been having an early finish at the end of the week since then, with no complaints about going.

At 4, Possum only stopped having her afternoon naps over the summer holidays and I now realise that she needs more time to build up to the second full day. Her kinder teacher is very supportive and will work with me as we build up those hours to a full day next term.

Reorganise the children’s wardrobes, drawers and buy winter clothes.
The re-org of the wardrobes and drawers have been completed, but I still have a few items of clothes that I need to purchase.

List of things to do before summer ends
We are about 75% of the way through this list and with warm weather forecast for the next week or so, we should try or complete most of these activities. I actually have two very close girlfriends coming over tomorrow night for the big relish cook up! On the book front, I have to admit it is more likely to be winter before I finish my book. I sort of new that this would be tough to achieve when I added it to the list. Mental note to self - need to be realistic with goals!

Not being too busy
It was my goal this year not to fall into the trap of being too busy and rushed. If I am to be honest to myself, using the politically correct terminology, in this area I “need improvement”. I have loved getting the blog up and running, but this combined with the hectic work schedule of Mr Infrastructure, I have been too busy.

Part of the problem for me is that I don’t like to miss out on anything! I can plan so much into my day and achieve it but, it may mean that my sleep quota is dramatically reduced. I really do need to work on this in future months.

Front Garden
Weeding, tidying and mulching were all completed by Mr Infrastructure and it looks so neat and tidy now!

PLAN - KEY TASKS FOR MARCH
I like to make sure that the tasks are measurable in some way. Most are concrete; things are bought, done, tidied, rearranged, etc but for those that aren’t quite so concrete, I like to define how I will measure my success (or lack there of!).

Not being too busy.
I need to be in bed by 11.00pm as a norm. There can be exceptions of course for fun and frivolity, but staying up late to cram in too many activities needs to stop. This will be a challenge for me, but is important for me to achieve this for my own health and to ensure that I can then give as much as I would like to the kids.

Complete buying winter clothes for children and mum and dad.
For the children this also means, auditing their school winter uniforms which they will need for Term 2. Dad and mum don’t need much, but I want a heavy winter coat. I saw one in a magazine recently and I am going to hunt around some Op shops to see if I can find one like it. It was very retro so hopefully I might get lucky and come across one.

Easter holiday and camping
I am originally from north west Victoria and still have my parents, sister and her family and much more extended family there. We haven’t been for a visit for nearly 6 months, so I am very excited about heading back there for the Easter Holidays. We are also going to try and fit in a couple of nights camping which should be lots of fun.

Enrollment/Registration for Term 2 after school activities.
In Australia we move from summer to winter sports and the end of this month, so I need to make sure I have all the appropriate paper work completed. Also the Leaping Lizards class that I do with Babagansouksi, I think is a little late in the morning for him. I have need to put him on a waiting list for an earlier class.

Back garden
This one is actually for Mr Infrastructure, but there are times that we all get out there together as a family, and March is really the last month of really good weather to do this. Weeding, tidying and mulching has all started in the back, but it just needs to be completed.

Given that we are a couple of days into March already, we have a holiday week end this week end, then Easter and school holidays all to squeeze into March, I think this month is going to just fly by!

What do you have planned for March?

Posts of the Month (Not mine!)

It has been two months since I have had this blog up and running and beside the fun and joy I have received from working on this in itself, it has also opened me up to a whole new world - the blogosphere. I have been amazed and impressed at the intellect, humour and honesty with which people blog.

I decided that I would like to collate my favourites for this month and then share on a monthly basis my posts of the month. When I told the sporting obsessed Mr Infrastructure that I was going to do this, he said “Good idea, it is just like plays of the month.” He has the most amazing ability to turn all things into a sporting analogy!

Anyway here they are and I would like to thank these bloggers for sharing their thoughts, stories and tips. I have loved reading them.

From the heart:
Charlottes story - angel in heaven. An emotional and beautifully written post about a mother’s loss.

Do you encourage motherhood? A very honest admission from a mother on her experience of motherhood.

More thoughts and an update on the ugly. A mum doing what all mum’s do at some point and second guessing herself.

Consuming Issues:
Being pretentious: no longer any fun. A humorous look at trying to shop ethically.

A critique on the buy handmade movement. Asks the questions that regardless of the fact that it is handmade, is it just “more crap for us to buy”?

Parenting:
Top ten groovy lullabies. Not only has Kate put together a great list of lullabies, but has gone to the trouble of including the associated YouTube video.

How to know if you’re a good mother. Most mums will relate to Cellobella as she reminisces about visiting the Maternal and Child Health Nurse weekly, then meets her just recently again.

Five ways to emotionally smart kids. An excellent and succinct piece on the importance on building emotional intelligence in your kids.

Tips:
Time leadership for bloggers a case study
With so much to look at in the blogosphere and other Internet associated activity, this is a great way to look at time management.

Core knowledge and creativity for Learning 2.0. Great thoughts on how Web 2.0 can be a learning tool for students (and adults!). Looks at the importance of creativity in education.

Go check them out and I am sure you will enjoy them too!
