Do or do not… there is no try

Achieving Your Goals

In my newsletter last week I actually quoted Yoda – yes a Star Wars character! Hilarious for me really as someone who really feels no affinity to the Star Wars series. But I did feel an affinity with the quote:

“Do or do not… there is no try.”

Even if you have only been reading my blog for a few months, you would have noticed how much I struggle with one of my goals – getting a decent amount of sleep at night. My goal is actually very moderate in that it is only setting the bar at six hours a night, but I regularly miss the mark.

While I was away in Japan, I came to the realisation, that it is very much my attitude and approach that is holding me back. I will say “I am going to bed at 10.30pm tonight”, but then let myself get caught up in work. Working from home means I can just keep working and I regularly do.

This month my approach is going to be different. Just like I have made it not negotiable with myself that I get up each morning to exercise, I am going to apply the same discipline to going to bed.

I take good care of myself in the way I eat and exercise, yet let myself down with sleep. Sleep is equally as important to my health and I need to be more serious about getting more.

What about you? Is your attitude or approach to a goal holding you back from achieving it?

My September goal review

Goals

Progress

Me - I am less rushed and healthier.

Continue to improve my diet: one meat free meal a week, reduce consumption of sugar and carbs. In Japan I let loose on the clean eating and ate all sorts of things! Some as part of experiencing Japanese culture and some just because really!

It was really interesting to see the side effects of eating foods, particularly refined sugar and gluten that I have note eaten for months.

By the time I was on the plane heading back to Australia, I was incredibly looking forward to getting back to my clean eating routine.

It was a beneficial experiment and it has given me more to think about with regard to how I approach the food I consume.

Read six books by the end of the year.I read a book while I was away in Japan! Loved it too and will review it on the blog soon.
Add variety to my exercise regime.Goal met. In October I will hopefully meet another goal that I have been working towards for 18 months now.
Sleep at least 6 hours a night on a regular basis.Struggled again with this in September.

Taking a slightly different approach and attitude to this goal in October. Feel like I was just trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Need to make more change to achieve this goal.

Family - We spend more time doing things together.

Monthly family meetings.Goal met!
Eat out together on a quarterly basis. We ate out for most meals in Japan and I was thrilled how well the kids coped and behaved.
Have an active family holiday. Thanks to Jetstar this goal is now completed. We had the most amazing holiday and it was certainly active with lots of walking each day.

I will be posting highlights of our holiday over the coming weeks. Loved Japan and would love to go back some time soon to see more.
Two big bush walks throughout the year. The kids and I went and did the 1000 steps together.

Relationship - We have more time together on our own and support each others interests.

A weekend away in 2013.This is planned for October.
Attend an event in the Comedy Festival, see 1 play, see 1 live music gig and a attend one event at the Melbourne Festival.Have tickets to an event in the Melbourne Festival in Oct.
Mr I will play football, cricket and cycle.Mr I has just written himself a training plan for himself, on top of his cricket and AFL 9s.

We work together very well to support each others activities. It does require planning though to make sure we fit it all in.
I will continue exercising 5 - 6 times a week.Goal met!

Work - Improved usability and resources on the blog and improved blogging skills.

Analyse PWK survey and implement changes to the blog by quarter one.Completed.
Develop the calendar to the next stage by quarter two.No longer proceeding with this.
Take course at Australian Writers Centre by quarter three. Not applicable this month.
Release new product by quarter four.Have changed the goal for this from being something short term, to longer term. Unsure of when I will launch it as yet.

I’m so like you with the sleep thing Nicole. I think getting plenty of sleep is so important especially when you have young kids as it can determine your mood, patience and energy levels for the whole day. Like you, eating well and exercising regularly are things I don’t compromise on but I seem to always let myself down on adequate sleep. I tell myself I’ll get to bed at a certain time yet I always find a whole lot of things to do and before I know it, it’s late and I’m still not in bed. It is just as important as eating well and exercising and I have to start seeing it that way and doing something about it. Thanks for the reminder :-).

Hi Nicole, your site is an inspiration! Thank you for all the tips & ideas. In last week’s newsletter you mentioned a book you had read that was thought-provoking: I’m really curious what the book was? Anne
