With the wonderfully warm weather we have been having in Melbourne, we have returned to an old school favourite for the school lunch boxes – frozen oranges snack.
The older two boys are the most keen to take these to school and they have taken one or a half of one (the year 7 boy prefers to take half to school, then have a half after school when he gets home) every day of this school term so far.
They are simple to prepare, but it does involve using plastic wrap unfortunately. If you have an idea on a way around this, I would love to hear it!
I cut up a large batch of oranges into quarters. Some are then just wrapped together as a whole, or I will wrap half an orange at a time.
It is the straight into the freezer. I am not entirely sure how long they take to freeze but I have made them up around 10pm and they are solid by the time the boys take them out of the freezer in the morning.
They then go straight into the lunch box or into the pocket if they have one, helping to keep the rest of the food cool for the day at school.
By the time the boys take them out at recess, they have thawed enough to easily eat. One likes to peel the skin off and then eat the orange, the other eats the flesh and leaves the peel.
What is popular in your kids’ lunch boxes at the moment?
