Penguin Father's Day Book Bundle

Celebrating Father’s Day with books + a fab giveaway

Celebrating Father’s Day with books about Dad

Father’s day is only a month away and for us Melbourne folk we will still be in stage 4 lockdown for COVID-19. Celebrating Father’s Day will require us to be a little more creative as we are significantly limited in the activities we can do.

One creative way to help the kids celebrate Father’s Day is through books who have fabulous father characters. The kids can give these books to their dad for Father’s Day then once they have made breakfast in bed for Dad (with help of course) they can spend time reading them together.

Before wrapping the books, it is a great idea to sit with the kids and have them write a draft of a special note that they can actually write inside the cover of the book for their Dad. The note could be:

  • a simple sentence about why they love their Dad
  • an acrostic poem using Dad or Dad’s name – this is where the first letters in each line spells out Dad Or Dad’s name
  • a favourite memory of doing something with their Dad
  • a clerihew poem – is a humorous poem consisting of two couplets and a specific rhyming scheme of AABB. The first line would mention dad.
  • if the child is not yet writing they can draw a picture of their Dad

Reading books together is not only a great way for kids to bond with their dad but it is also great for vocabulary development, encouraging a love of reading and role modelling expression and tonal changes in voice for effect.

If you think Dad might need some inspiration, here is a cute video of award-winning journalist and dad Paul Kennedy reading I Love Dad with The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle to his son.

Below are after some ideas of books with great Dad characters from the Penguin collection for younger kids:

Father's Day books Roald Dahl and John Williamson

My Dad Is Fantastic by Roald Dahl – is a wonderful read aloud rhyming book from Roald Dahl and celebrating dads everywhere from their most FANTASTIC moments to their most magnificent WHIZZPOPS!

My Dad Snores by John Williamson – as a child (and now even more so) our dad was a very loud snorer, so I would have loved this book. This dad snores and no one can sleep, so they need to find a solution.

Father's Day Books Bluey My Dad is Awesome

Bluey: My Dad Is Awesome – Everyone loves Bandit, especially Bluey and Bingo! Find out what makes this true blue dad so special in this hilarious and heartwarming book.

Father's Day Book - Spot and The Hungry Caterpillar

Spot Loves His Dad – In this addition to the ‘Spot Loves’ titles, Spot is spending time with his Dad. They do lots of fun things together – from playing football to flying a kite to feeding ducks.

I Love Dad With The Very Hungry Caterpillar – Join The Very Hungry Caterpillar for a celebration of love and all the ways to tell your dad how much you care. This lovely little book features Eric Carle’s colourful artwork of animal dads and babies, with the Hungry Caterpillar making an appearance alongside each one.

Father's Day Books - Peppa Pig

Peppa Pig: I Love You, Daddy Pig – It’s just another normal day for Peppa and George. Daddy Pig takes them to the supermarket, then for lunch with Granny and Grandpa Pig, before popping in to work for a while. But super Daddy Pig makes their day anything but ordinary by adding lots of fun and excitement to everything they do.

Peppa Pig: My Daddy – Peppa shares all the things she love about her daddy.
