Some fab online sales and tips for getting the most out of online sales

For some of us (like me), the thought of shopping on Boxing Day or the days immediately after Christmas is more of a nightmare than a dream. I felt like I have certainly bought enough recently! But if you are like me and you have six birthdays to buy for between now and Australia Day, it can be a great time to pick up some really great gifts at excellent prices.

To make sure I buy with intention and thought here are some things I do when shopping online Boxing Day sales:

Have a list of what I am going to buy or who I am going to buy for

Sometimes I will know exactly what I would like to buy for one of the family members’ birthdays so write that on my list, other times I know I need to buy a gift but am not sure what I will get them. In that case I write down who I am buying for and how much I want to spend. Setting the budget before I go online is very useful as it is too easy to get caught up in getting a bargain and spending more than I usually spend on a gift.

Look at postage and delivery fees

It can be easy to think you are getting a great deal online, but then realise you have paid a significant amount in postage and delivery fees. If they have a bricks and mortar store, it may actually be cheaper to visit the store and make the purchase there. Many stores now have click and collect options, so you make the purchase knowing you have the item you want, but without the delivery fees.

Compare prices

If the item you are after is not exclusive to one store, make sure you search online for other stockists and see where you can get the best deal. As noted above, it could come down to who has the cheaper postage and delivery fees, so check for that.

Check their returns policy

If you are buying gifts there is always a chance they may have it already or it may not fit correctly if it clothing. Check what the returns policy is for the online store and make sure it won’t set you back if you need to return or exchange the item.

Assess your wardrobe

If you are just going looking online for a bargain to update your wardrobe, do a wardrobe assessment before going online. Look at what colours you currently have in your wardrobe, what gaps you might have in key basic pieces and think about what events you have coming up in the next year. Each Boxing Day sale, I usually buy a formal dress for speaking events / formal occasions that I will wear through out the year.
