Zero waste starter kit for families + giveaway

This giveaway has now closed. Congratulations to Anne you were the lucky winner, check you inbox for more details!

This year I have been focusing on reducing the amount of waste that comes out of our house. We are great at recycling – we recycle cans, tins and jars (I reuse most of my jars), separate hard and soft plastics and compostable matter, but for us to live a more sustainable life we need to reduce the amount of plastic etc we bring into the house.

As a family we still have a very long way to go, but I am happy that we are making gradual changes that are reducing the amount of plastic that we have to recycle. Reusable shopping bags are an easy obvious one for families, but other small changes we can make are:

  • using reusable food covers instead of plastic wrap or foil
  • using reusable produce bags for fruit and veg
  • using reusable bags and containers for buying items in bulk – eg nuts, coconut flakes, cacao powder etc
  • using reusable bags for bread

These are recent changes we have made and they are really doable for even large families. It requires a shift in behaviours, a shift in our habits to make sure we have the right bags on hand and use them and swap the products that we usually reach for.

Beeswax food wraps – wraps are fantastic substitute for plastic wrap and the like. They are made using 100% organic cotton infused with a special blend of beeswax and oils to create a flexible, slightly sticky and naturally antibacterial wrap for storing and packing food. We use them for all sorts of foods – cheese, lettuce, fruit, covering left overs and the like.

Reusable produce bags – these bags are fabulous and prevent food from having to roll around the trolley or basket in an attempt to avoid using plastic bags. Each of these bags are made from different fabrics or construction to suit the varying needs of different produce.

  • The natural fibre bag (absorbs excess moisture and restricts airflow) – for green beans, nuts, grains, bulk foods
  • The solid weave bag (restricts air flow and locks in moisture) – for squash, broccoli, carrots and celery
  • The mesh weave bag (allows ethylene* gas, nature’s ripening agent, to escape) – for apples, oranges, onions and potatoes

And this is by far my new favourite! While I don’t eat sliced bread, everyone else in the family does. I have tried taking containers to the bakery to put the sliced bread into and I have tried using paper bags at the bakery, then putting them in the container when I get home. Neither worked incredibly well, but these bread bags have!

ONYA bread bags – we have two of these as I usually buy bread two loaves at a time. Our super local bakery are very happy to take the bags from me and then place the loaves into them once they are sliced.

The Onya Bread bags are made from 100% non-toxic materials – made from 100% rPET recycled drink bottles! As they are double lined and have a roll and clip closure it keeps the bread fresh.
