There are many elements, which need to be organised when looking after a family. One that you don’t often think about too much if you are in good health is the family’s health, including your own.
I write frequently about the importance of taking care of myself, so I can best look after my family. I do pretty well at eating a healthy diet and exercising, but when it comes to undertaking regular health checks, I don’t do so well.

Being busy is a factor in this, but not knowing what I should be checking up on is probably a bigger factor in the equation. At what age should you have certain things checked out? How often should I get the kids’ eyes checked? When should Mr I (someone who rarely goes to the doctor) book himself in for a check up?

Tools to help you organise the family’s health

HCF
HCF is a not-for-profit health insurance fund. As a not for profit their focus is on their members, not shareholders, meaning they can give members more in the way of benefits.

In 2010-11 financial year, HCF returned 91% of premiums to members in the form of benefits, compared to an average of 85% for all other funds.

HCF also wants to make it easier for families to manage their health. They have their unique online and phone-based program called My Health Guardian for members. It’s free and offered as part of your HCF membership.

HCF My Guardian - Taking Action
My Health Guardian provides a framework for organising your or your family’s health needs. There are a number of options you can take depending on your requirements:

Health and wellbeing program – provides online dietary advice, exercise modules and health coaching. This program includes a 90 day health improvement challenge starting with a comprehensive My Health Guardian health assessment completed online.

Health management tools – provides online health assessments, online access to approved health coaches and SMS or email reminders for any preventative and health screening tests you might need.

Chronic disease support – this could be for a chronic condition either you or a family member might have. My Health Guardian provides care support services including:

  • Telephone support from registered nurses.
  • A registered nurse care manager to help you draw up an online health action plan, which can then be monitored for progress.
  • Online access to approved health coaches for guidance on your diet, physical activity and lifestyle.
  • SMS or email reminders for any preventative and health screening tests you might need.
  • Reminder calls prior to your GP appointments.
  • Advice on local community services to help you with the maintenance of your condition.

There are some conditions applying to HCF members participating in My Health Guardian programs as detailed here.

My Health Guardian was awarded the Canstar Cannex Innovation Excellence Award in 2010. (CANSTAR is a leading specialist research service providing fact-based data and ratings on finance and insurance institutions.)
