lunch box ideas

School lunches are one of those unavoidable, repetitious tasks you have to do as a parent. I have had kids at school now for over eight years.  With roughly 40 weeks of school a year, I estimate I have made at a minimum 1600 lunch boxes (40x5x8)!  It can be a struggle to keep variety in the kids lunch boxes when you are making so very many.

Every month in 2012, I have shared what I have put in the kids lunch boxes to provide inspiration for other families, including tips as well to help make the lunch box task easier.

Two key ways I make the lunch box task easier is by:

  1. Creating a process and a lunchbox template.
  2. Incorporating available seasonal fruit and vegetables.

The feedback on my lunch box ideas has been wonderful, with people each month letting me know what they cooked, how their kids liked it and how having the ideas has made the task of packing school lunches so much easier. Here is just a sample of what readers have been saying:

1 rasp and white choc chip muffins

2 choc slice

3 quinoa balls

4 scrolls

5 quinoa

Lunch Box Ideas Calendar DSC06559
As you don’t always have an electronic device in front of you when you are thinking about the school lunches, I have created a physical family calendar you can hang on the wall in your kitchen and easily refer to.  All lunch box items marked with an asterisk have a recipe listed on the Calendar recipe page of planningwithkids.com.  All recipes have been tried and tested in kids lunch boxes and are easy to make.

The Planning With Kids Lunch Box Ideas Calendar is not just a place you can write down your commitments, but each month there is information to assist you to get the kids lunches made with the least amount of fuss. January outlines a basic process and template you can use.
