steel cut oats porridge slow cooker recipe

Steel cut oats porridge (slow cooker recipe) and an offer for you!

It has been great to teach the kids more about whole food through my eating journey. We have only ever previously had rolled oats or quick oats in our house, so when I started making porridge from steel cut oats, I lined up the three version of oats to explain to the kids what it was all about.

  • On the left we have steel cut oats. They are whole oat groats which have been cut into a few pieces on a steel buhr mill.
  • In the middle are rolled oats which are oat groats that have been de-husked, steamed and then flattened under rollers before being lightly toasted. These oats absorb liquid and cook much quicker than steel-cut oats.
  • On the right are quick oats. These oats are pressed even thinner than rolled oats, so cook the quickest.

As with all foods the less processed they are before we eat them the better, so steel cut oats are the best option. They do however take much longer to cook. Time however I have worked out doesn’t have to mean difficult or inconvenient. Bring out the slow cooker!

This recipe makes enough to feed my family, so you may wish to halve it if you are looking to feed a smaller number of people. You can keep left overs in the fridge though and reheat with some additional liquid if you like though.

I have used blog sponsor Pureharvest’s Organic Coco Quench to make this porridge. This means it is a great dairy free option for those with dairy intolerances. Coco Quench is made from coconut and rice milk, so it has a blend of complex carbohydrates from the brown rice and the goodness of medium chain saturated fatty acids (MCFAs) from coconut milk.

By giving the slow cooker a coat with coconut oil before adding the oats, it also makes it a less painful cooking experience as the slow cooker bowl washes up easily after cooking.

I pop the steel cut oats porridge on just before I go to bed.

Then we wake to the lovely smell of porridge.

This recipe is really just a base for what you can do. I have tried adding banana and apple during the cooking process, which the kids will eat, but they really just like it with a teaspoon of sweetener like the rice malt syrup from blog sponsor Pureharvest.

Steel cut oats have a slightly different texture to quick oats; it is more chewy than mushy.

Recipe type: Breakfast
Ingredients:
Method:
  1. Using a pastry brush coat the inside of the slow cooker with melted coconut oil as this will help prevent the porridge from sticking to the bottom and sides.
  2. Add the steel cut oats then pour the Coco Quench into the slow cooker.
  3. Stir, then place the lid on, place the setting on low.
  4. Cook for 8 - 10 hours. Ours is usually perfect after 9 hours of cooking.
  5. Spoon into bowls and add a teaspoon of rice malt syrup to sweeten if desired. Or alternatively add some fresh fruit, coconut flakes or seeds to add to the flavour and texture.
Notes:
This makes a large amount of porridge, if you are aiming to feed a family of four, I would halve the ingredients.
