Easy Calzone Recipe

This is my version of Calzone. It might not meet the standards of Calzone from traditionalists, but it is a really easyway to make them. I use our bread maker and make a batch of pizza dough as the base for the Calzone.

Do you have foods that instantly remind you of something? For me every time I even hear the word Calzone, I think of Seinfeld. I love Seinfeld and have watched the episodes so many times!

“The Calzone” is the 130th episode of Seinfeld and it aired for the first time in America all the way back on April 25, 1996 and I thought I would share a little bit of that episode with you! {If you are reading via email you can click through to the blog to see a short clip from the show.}

My Easy Calzone Recipe

Pizza Dough Ingredients:

  • 1 batch pizza dough or the following ingredients to make in bread maker
  • 200 mls cold tap water
  • 2 1/2 cups plain flour
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 3/4 tsps dry yeast
  • 1/4 bunch basil

Filling ingredients:

  • 300 grams bacon
  • 250 grams cheese
  • 1 tomato
  • 200 mls pasta sauce

Method:
1. Add all the ingredients to the pan of your bread maker in the order they are listed.

2. Place the pan into the bread maker, close the lid, choose dough from the settings and then click start.

3. In my bread maker it takes 90 minutes. Just before dough is ready, chop and cook bacon, roughly chop basil, slice tomatoes and grate cheese.

4. Preheat oven to 220 degrees Celsius.

5. When ready divide the dough into six pieces.

6. On a lightly floured surface roll out a piece of dough and then add your desired fillings. Add the cheese first, then pasta sauce, then all your other favourties to one half. We had very simple Calzones – cheese, pasta sauce, bacon, tomato and basil.

7. Around the edge of the dough, lightly brush on some egg.

8. Fold over the dough and then press down the edges so it is sealed.

9. Place the calzones onto a lined tray. Lightly brush more egg on top of the calzone and place in the oven for 10 – 15 minutes until they are golden brown on top.

10. Remove from oven and cool on a rack if you are not going to eat them straight away.
