2011 Goals – End Of Year Review

I have learnt a lot about goal setting in 2011. This year I didn’t fair so well in achieving all my goals. I have rated my achievement in the table below and will explain my key learning after the table.

This time last year I wrote about setting SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time Bound. And while I believe that this type of goal setting does work, this year I have realised that it also needs something else – limits.

In 2011, I found that I had set myself too many goals. As new opportunities came along like:

There was just no way I could keep focused on everything and so some of my goals received almost no attention.

This caused me a degree of angst, as I very much like to tick things of my list and know that I am completing what I set out to for the year.

So next week when I post my goals for 2012, there will be only four key goals for the year. This should allow room for me to accept other opportunities as they arise without putting myself under more pressure and causing myself angst about non completion of goals.

How was 2011 for you? Did you achieve what you set out to for the year?
