halloumi recipes - fried cheese
I cooked this super tasty Halloumi (Fried Cheese) on Sunday at my sister’s house. The exciting thing about this was my dad actually tasted it and loved it. My dad is very much a meat and three veg man, so to have him taste and eat something new was awesome. I considered this a special gift to my dad for father’s day!

Halloumi Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 500gm Halloumi cheese
  • 2 eggs (only whites needed)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lemon
  • Optional – Salad to serve

Method:

  1. Separate eggs whites. Lightly mix whites and water in a medium size bowl.
  2. Cut halloumi cheese into your desired shape. I just cut it into strips, but I have seen it cut into triangles as well.
  3. Dip the halloumi cheese into the egg-white mix and then dust with plain flour.

  5. In a heavy based fry pan, heat the olive oil on a medium heat.
  6. halloumi recipes - crying cheese

  7. Once oil is hot, add cheese and cook for a couple of minutes each side.
  8. Cook the halloumi cheese until it is slightly soft and turns golden-brown.
  9. As the fry pan I used wasn’t large, I cooked the cheese in batches.
  10. Serve immediately with wedges of lemon and salad if desired.

I just love Saganaki, so much in fact my 2 year old daughter can already say “saganaki”. It’s so very naughty for you but oh so delicious. I haven’t made it myself. I usually wait until I eat out for Greek, but I should give this a try.

Very cute. My younger kids weren’t to keen on it. That actually made me happy as it meant more for me!

We love halloumi – we refer to it as ‘squeaky cheese’.

    • PlanningQueen September 06, 2011 at 10:06 am

Very good name for it, I have always thought it was quite squeaky!

Hhmmmm we love Halloumi in our house too!! Just wondering why you coated it with the egg whites & flour? We cut ours and cook it exactly as you have without the coating & its delish on its own.

I searched through cook books and online and a couple of the recipes recommended doing the egg white, so just gave it a go. Thought it would prevent it from sticking.

I just coat with g free flour – no egg wash here either.

Whatever way you make it, halloumi is teh business (as is saganaki … salivating now …)

It is indeed, could do with some more right now!

Another halloumi and saganaki fan here! But seriously, as Kim said, there’s no need to coat it in anything, just slice and fry. We usually have it when we have a BBQ, and just cook it on there (either before or with the meat)

I can imagine it would well on the BBQ, thanks for the tip.

    I ADORE Haloumi :)
Have never dipped it/coated it before frying it though…

A big favourite in our house is fried haloumi with fried slices of chorizo wrapped in wholemeal pita breads….

Well now I’ve made myself hungry, I think I know what we’re having tonight!!

I have a very big soft spot for haloumi – I always have it on top of nice crispy lettuce it is a real delight.

Yum, I love haloumi….try it wrapped in lebanese bread with diced tomato and a sprinkle of oregano and toasted on the sandwich press.

Slices of haloumi on the BBQ are one of my favourite quick and easy pre-dinner snacks when we have friends around. Yum.

I love Haloumi! I cook it on its own or coat it with flour. I love it with scrambled eggs too.

Our whole family loves Haloumi! As a salad with the softest baby spinach and (unpeeled) pear slices which goes well with its’ squeakiness :) . I have not made it battered yet, but will surely give it a go, yum!

I tried cooking Halloumi for the first time at christmas 2010 and it was delicious. I like your recipe and will give it a go, because I wasn’t sure what I was doing last Christmas and just popped cheese in fry pan with olive oil, be nice to try it done differently.
