I asked the gorgeous Nikki from Styling You a number of weeks ago if she would like to write a guest post for me on the essential fashion items for winter for mums. I have personally held off my pre-conference shopping until this post, to make sure I have more of a plan for what I actually buy. I love this post, so thanks Nikki!

Nikki’s fabulous blog Styling You is about fashion and beauty for the real world. Now is a great to visit her blog as she is giving away $2000 worth of prizes - prizes made up from some of her favourite things like a Mimco Beatnik Hip Bag, Not Your Daughter’s Jeans and Cloud Nine Hair iron. Actually don’t enter – I want to win!

Mums are always on the move. We need simple, easy-care fashion and beauty solutions to work for us every day. As the seasons change it’s time to take stock and check that you have these wardrobe and beauty cabinet essentials at the ready.

1. Jeans

Not Your Daughter's Jeans $199 www.nydj.com

Not just any jeans. You want jeans that not only look good but that you look forward putting them on every day. If you’ve struggled to find pair that does both these things, check out Not Your Daughter’s Jeans. You can even check out me in a pair in my review here.

2. A jacket or coat

Witchery pea coat $349.95 www.witchery.com

The weight and style should suit winter where you are – ideally it’s a jacket or coat that looks just as at home, out to lunch or at the park.

3. A pair flat boots or ballet flats

Wittner koko ballet flats $129.95 www.wittner.com

Choose a style that is comfortable but still looks dressed up. I like to have both options as some days are not as cold as others.

4. Black leggings

Country Road seamed pant $79.95 www.countryroad.com

With black leggings you can turn a summer dress or tunic into a winter outfit – just add boots and ballet flats and a top layered underneath. You can also see my full review of these Country Road Jeggings for more info.

5. Non-bulky layering garments

Metalicus low scoop neck long-sleeve top $65 www.metalicus.com

Metalicus’ Basics range is a firm fixture in my wardrobe. They’re lightweight, can be washed in a lingerie bag and don’t need ironing.

6. A go-to dress

Wyse bodywear puff dress www.wysebodywear.com

Choose a style that can be layered over a Metalicus top and worn with leggings and boots or ballet flats. I have several like this that are perfect because they’re non-iron as well. Clothes like this are what I call my secret weapons – they can get you from the playground to the office. You can see more ideas in my post Women on the move: these are your wardrobe secret weapons

7. Scarves

Trenery scarf $69.95 www.trenery.com

These are winter’s version of the statement necklace. Don’t leave home without one for both warmth and interest.

8. Lip balm

Lanolips 101 Ointment $17.95 www.lanolips.com

Lips and winter do not go well together – always carry a tube with you. This is my favourite – it’s also good for cuts and grazes.

9. Face moisturiser

Trilogy Face Care Ultra Hydrating Cream $37.95 www.trilogyproducts.com

If your skin is prone to dryness then consider a more hydrating formula for winter.

10. Hair treatment

Kerastase Reflection Masque Chroma Riche $55 www.kerastase.com

Our hair may not be prone to the frizziness of summer but in winter it’s subjected to vast changes in temperatures – in and out of heating. You’re also more likely to get out the hairdryer than have dripping hair on a cold day. Treat your hair once a week to an at-home treatment.

What do you have on your “must have” list for this winter?

    What a great post :)
I’d say pretty much that whole list is on my must haves for Winter along with a knitted hat/beret – perfect to hide bad hair days under AND they look adorable.

So agree that a winter hat can hide all manner of hair sins.

Oh, that’s SO sad about your sass & bides. Good luck with finding a new pair.

Thanks for the post! I just moved to Australia and I’ve been wondering where the moms shop! Super helpful.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au Nikki @ Styling You

Hi Bernice, I’m glad it was helpful for you. It’s just the tip of the iceberg but a good starting point.

  • Mel K

Flat, knee-high black boots. They are my SAVIOUR in winter: respectable and stylish enough to wear to a meeting, comfortable enough to wrangle the kids, and warm and weatherproof. I got a great pair from John Fleuvog in the US and felt faint at the price ($350 US) but have worn them so many times and they have lasted so long that they have been worth every penny – two years of wearing almost every day in winter and they’re in great condition.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au Nikki @ Styling You

Oh, that’s so true – good quality boots are definitely an investment. As I live in Queensland I get many years out of a boot purchase. I splurged two years ago on a $500 pair (eeekk) but they still look as good (and make me feel as good) as they did the first time I wore them.

I’m planning to buy a floppy black hat this winter, ala Kate Moss. Some ideas of how to wear here http://bit.ly/eE8V6Y
I think it will add some shoooosh to all of the above pieces, which are the foundation of any great wardrobe. Great round up Nikki!

What a great addition?! Perfect on those sunny winter days when you still need some sun protection as well – practical and stylish!

Im thinking I might give flares a try, Im also after a nice pair of loafers and a beige pea coat.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au Nikki @ Styling You

Yes! I’m loving the Sambag loafers. Flares are great if you have a little height and I love pea coat.

Aren’t there more important things we could be focusing on rather than frittering away enormous sums of money on clothes? Go to globalrichlist.com and type in your salary … find out where you are in the grand scale of things. We are so, so so incredibly rich in western society, I think the money has gone to our heads. Not one of these things is an ‘essential’. These are luxuries. A £200 pair of jeans vs. life saving food/medicine for hundreds of children? THATS an essential. We don’t need more stuff, we need more love.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au Nikki @ Styling You

You have a very good point, Mezzy. And yes, you do not HAVE to buy a $200 pair of jeans – but for women looking for some direction in what they can wear to feel great, then this list is a guide. You could look for every one of these style of items (beauty items aside) in a second-hand store. The items referenced are just suggestions.

    • http://planningwithkids.com/ PlanningQueen

      Hi Mezzy,

Of course these items aren’t essential for living and yes I live in a privileged western society. On this blog, I do focus on a number of other things on the whole. In my side bar you will find two not for profit organisations that I actively donate to. I asked Nikki to write this guest post as I was very much in need of a wardrobe update and appreciated her expert advice.

It is great to hear the criticism of consumerism, so thanks for raising the point. It is something I am very conscious of with my kids.

      Nic

Even though I am pregnant I am happpy to say that I can still mange to incorporate all these into my list of must haves for the season. Oh except the hair treatment. Could probably do with one but really need a cut and color first!
and as a side note, we are all well aware that there are many more pressing issues going on in the world, but this should not stop us from finding enjoyment in anything we can…no matter how trivial it may seem. And one should never judge how someone spends their time or money. In my experience, it is usually the ones that are not up and about sprouting to the world all they are doing that are often doing the most.

Thanks for this list, I need as much help as I can get! Not at all confident in dressing myself.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au Nikki @ Styling You

Happy to help out, Fiona. Happy shopping.
