Homemade Baby Food Recipes

A couple of weeks ago I wrote on the process that I follow for making homemade baby food in bulk. Now that our bub has been eating for a while, he is starting to eat more flavoursome food and I thought I would share a couple of recipes that all 5 of my babies have loved! The original inspiration for these recipes came from Robyn Barker’s fantastic book Australian Baby and Toddler Meals.

Homemade Chicken Casserole For Baby

Ingredients:

  • 250 gms chicken breast minced
  • 1/2 butternut pumpkin
  • 3 large potatoes
  • 4 large carrots
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 3 tbsps tomato paste
  • 3 cups chicken stock (I use Massel Powder to make up my stock)
  • Fresh parsley
  • 2 tbsp oil

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
  2. Chop up pumpkin and potato in to similar sized small pieces (approx 1.5cm x 1.5cm). Slice carrots.
  3. In a larger frying pan, heat the oil on a medium heat.
  4. Add chicken mince and brown.
  5. Add garlic and other vegetables and cook for a couple of minutes, stirring constantly.
  6. Add tomato paste, parsley and stock, stirring well. You may not need all of the stock, but the vegetables will need to be covered.
  7. Pour mixture into a casserole dish, cover and cook for an hour.
  8. Once cooled slightly, pour casserole into a larger bowl and mash.
  9. I usually then half the mixture and mix half with rice and half with cous cous.
  10. If you are freezing this meal, it needs to be moist or it will be dry when defrosted. Add additional stock if required.

Cheesy Vegetables For Baby

Homemade Baby Food - Steamer
The great thing about this recipe is that I can just throw on extra veggies when I am steaming veggies for us, and make this tasty homemade meal for the baby. I have just listed some suggested veggies and quantities, but I generally just use whatever I have on hand. This meal contains egg and should only be given to babies once egg has been appropriately introduced to their diet.

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 butternut pumpkin
  • 2 large potatoes
  • 1/4 cauliflower
  • 4 large carrots
  • 2 zucchini
  • 1/2 cup tasty cheese grated
  • 2 egg yolks

Instructions:

  1. Heat the water in steamer.
  2. Chop up pumpkin and potato in to similar sized small pieces (approx 1.5cm x 1.5cm). Slice carrots and zucchini and break up cauliflower.
  3. Steam veggies until they are tender. This will take approx 10 – 15 minutes.
  4. Once cooked, transfer veggies to a large bowl, add egg yolk and cheese immediately. The egg yolk will cook using the heat of the veggies
  5. Mash veggies. If the mixture is too dry, just add some left over water from the steamer. If you are freezing this meal, it needs to be quite moist or it will be too dry when defrosted.

If you have some easy tried and tested favourite baby recipes, I would love to hear about them. Either leave the recipe in the comment or a link to where I can find it on you blog.
