Chocolate Balls Recipe And Family Menu Plan

Chocolate Balls recipe

My 8 year old made these last week, to take with him for a sleep over at his friend’s house at the beach. Chocolate Balls are a great recipe for kids to start cooking with, as they are incredibly simple to make and also very tasty to eat.

They can be a Iittle messy, so I quite often will set up a table outside for the kids to make them on. I am sure that they like this better than making them inside too, as there is less chance of mum catching them eating the mixture!

Chocolate Balls Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 packet Marie biscuits approx 250 grams
  • 1 tin condensed milk approx 395 grams
  • 1 – 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • Approx 1-2 cups of desiccated coconut (never actually measured how much we use, maybe just start with 1, and then pour more as you need it! Also in the photo above, he actually used shredded coconut, as that was all that we had.)

Method:

  1. Place Marie biscuits into a plastic bag (out of the packet) and then crush with a rolling pin.
  2. Once to a consistent texture pour into a medium size bowl.
  3. Add cocoa and stir.
  4. Pour in condensed milk and combine thoroughly.
  5. Pour coconut into a shallow bowl.
  6. Using a tablespoon of mixture, roll into ball then drop into coconut and cover completely.
  7. Place chocolate ball into a container and continue making balls until you have used all the mixture.
  8. Place in an airtight container in the fridge until set.
  9. They are kept best in the fridge even once set.

chocolate balls slice

If you are looking for a short cut to this recipe, you can try making it into a slice!

This weekend I took a short cut, sprinkled desiccated coconut on the bottom of a lined tray, pressed in the mixture sprinkled more desiccated coconut then let it set. Once set I cut it into bars and the kids are now having what we have dubbed “chocolate ball slice” for their home baked treat this week!

Just like when making the balls, moist hands work best when working the mixture. Another reader suggested using a piece of baking paper on top and using a rolling pin to flatten it out. I haven’t tried this, but think it sound like a very smart idea!
