I mealplan monthly - this month has been my first go at mealplanning - let alone monthly but I basically run it from pay to pay. From my meal plan I detail the ingredients and add them to my shopping list.

I try to make double of some meals (like lasagne, meatloaf, some casseroles) and then schedule the other half on a busy day (for us that is Thursday) at the beginning of the pay month where there are no leftovers, I use the slow cooker.

There are nights where things don't go to plan (i.e. you go out to dinner with friends unexpectedly) that then adds a 'wild card' meal that you would have had, to swap for another meal in another week.. you can choose to cook and freeze or just have the ingredients on standby.

The other thing to remember is if you do a monthly shop, use the bulkiest ingredients first if you have a small fridge freezer (we don't but anyway!) or the recipes with the most fresh ingredients.
