I totally agree with you and Kevin on the subject of homework. Surely a day's learning is enough in anyones life!
It's great you have found ways to minimise the upset.

I find the time limit is most important for my young fella. Especially if he's getting frustrated with something he's trying to do.

Communicating with the teacher is a big thing for us too. I'm finding with (again) the young fella that his teacher at times doesn't give him enough instructions on how to complete a task which might be ok for some kids, but not my kid who needs a process to apply in the language area's he struggles with (and has struggled with since he was a toddler).

I am not an advocate of homework because I believe kids go to school for their formal learning and when they come home they should play. Kids do not stop learning when they finish school, they learn in different ways in different environments which is beneficial to their development.

As an educator I see that there is a tension because of the benefits of parental involvement in kids education, especially in the early years of schooling. Encouraging when listening to reading and helping kids with writing and math are key to their success.
But we need to remember that they are kids and childhood should be fun. The risk is that we can turn learning into a negative experience enforcing the homework issue. Far better that kids develop a love of learning and are motivated to continue working on a project at home.

As with most things in life balance is crucial. Off my hobby horse now. :-)
