Thanks for those great ideas.

My Son is two and a half and started to take an interest in cleaning about 6 months ago so we have purchased him a little people's indoor broom, outdoor broom, brush and shovel and a mop – these are great tools to get him involved and he loves to help out with the housework and enjoys using his very own tools to give us a hand.

Love the idea of doing the house work to music, will take that tip on board next time we clean.

Cheers

We don't attach pocket money to chores either and while they have money they can 'earn' by doing extra, we also give them money for nothing. It is their share of the household income just as housework is their share of the household care.

Privileges are withdrawn for lack of household help though. Things like tv/pc/gamesystem time.

We use a timer too, and if the job is taking longer than expected we time in a break or two.

There are some really good ideas here. Thanks! I especially like the idea of playing music they enjoy.

I'm finding that different things work for each of my kids. My son likes to "work against the clock", my oldest daughter likes to do things with me during the day. The youngest is proving a bit of a challenge and I think this might be where the music comes in :-)

I really need to be aware of my own reactions when they want to help. Sometimes I slip into the "it'll be quicker and easier if I just do it myself" mentality, which I'm sure thwarts their enthusiasm. So what if it's not perfect and it takes twice as long.
