I usually keep spare shoes and jackets in the car (not much public transport here so we always have the car). I let my girls bring a toy each, wear special clothes. If it's going to be long I might pack the laptop with DVD's. Snacks are a must - my kids are always hungry. Water bottles. Next weekend we're going to a family rodeo - so I'd better think about a bag for that. We do various things like that.
