Our family members also talked (with caution) about the destruction of war, and never glorified it in any way. I was raised with a healthy respect, which taught me about the importance of world peace.
I guess the television depicts war frequently. Talking with our children about war and death should always be age and developmentally appropriate. Often  children ask questions, and answering them with the information they requested is a good starting point.
