I would add breastfeed. Obviously it only works for children of a certain age, but not only does it calm and comfort the child but the hormone rush calms me too, not to mention having to sit quietly and cuddle. Doesn't work as well when you've got older children needing attention, but often the older kids are happily reading or drawing while I've got a grizzly toddler clinging to my leg while I'm trying to cook dinner. A sit down and a lovely BF works as a circuit breaker in my house.

This is a great list and something I could really use. The hardest thing is recognise when you are about to lose it and stop. Just going through the list is probably a good way to start thinking about it. I absolutely agree that the kids take their moods from me. Sometimes I see the things my 4 year old does and realise how much she is just following my mood (scary!)

Very sensible list - it is the easiest things that work best for families...and also being game enough to do what you think other families may not do. Preventing family melt down is child protection in action. Love this and will be linking to it.

Excellent ideas! I can vouch for the hugs - they work like a charm during a meltdown.

If I am really not in the mood to smile, I ignore the whining, and I let him know that he's not getting a response from me till he stops whining. That works too!

These are all great suggestions to change the mood of the house - or the mom or child. I'm always amazed at how a simple hug can change my mood or improve the mood of an aggrivated child. Great list!

Thanks so much for stopping by my site - so nice to meet you. Have a good day and I hope to see you again soon. Kellan

Great list, and I do most of these, when I actually stop myself from just losing it and yelling at the kids! That's the hardest part for me, catching myself before I go completely ballistic :-)
With No. 9, I do something similar but I sing in a fake opera voice. The kids love it and it always makes them laugh and do what I ask/sing them!
In addition, sometimes it's just necessary for me to send them to their bedrooms for 15 minutes or so. Especially if they're squabbling. My daughter will get into bed and read, and my son often has a little nap, if I'm lucky.
