Obviously it only works for children of a certain age, but not only does it calm and comfort the child but the hormone rush calms me too, not to mention having to sit quietly and cuddle. Doesn't work as well when you've got older children needing attention, but often the older kids are happily reading or drawing while I've got a grizzly toddler clinging to my leg while I'm trying to cook dinner. A sit down and a lovely BF works as a circuit breaker in my house. I would add breastfeed.
